Family residence permit can be issued for a period not exceeding 3 years at a time.The Family Residence Permit is available to spouses and dependent children (under 18 years old) of either Turkish citizens or foreign residents with valid residence permits. The permit's duration is determined by the sponsor's residence permit and can be granted for up to three years.

1. How long can a family residence permit be granted?

A family residence permit can be granted for a maximum duration of 3 years. After the expiration of the 3-year period, an application for the renewal of the family residence permit must be submitted.

2. Who Can Get a Family Residence Permit?

  • Turkish citizen’s or blue card holder’s foreign spouse and children,
  • Turkish residence permit holder’s foreign spouses and children,
  • Foreign spouses and children of beneficiaries of subsidiary protection

may be granted a family residence permit for a period of 3 years.

Family residence permit is granted for up to three years to the mentioned individuals. However, the duration of the family residence permit cannot exceed the duration of the sponsor's residence permit.

3. How long does it take for my residence permit application to be evaluated?

Residence permit applications are typically processed within 90 days at most. Applicants will be notified of the decisions regarding their application within this timeframe.

4. What Are The Conditions To Be Met by The Sponsor:

  • The total income of the sponsor must be at least equal to the minimum wage (which is 17,002 Turkish Liras in 2024).
  • The sponsor's income must be at least one-third of the minimum wage per person for each family member who will apply (which is 5666 Turkish Liras per person in 2024)
  • The sponsor must live in a home that meets basic standards for health and safety.
  • Health insurance covering all family members.
  • The sponsor must provide a criminal record proving no convictions for crimes against family integrity within the five years preceding the application date.
  • Generally, the sponsor must have resided in Turkey with a residence permit for at least one year. However, this requirement doesn't apply to individuals with residence permits for scientific research or work purposes, blue card holders, and foreigners married to Turkish citizens
  • The sponsor must be registered in the Address Registration System (AKS).

Note: There may be a general exemption to these rules for refugees and beneficiaries of subsidiary protection in Turkey.

5. What Are The Conditions to be met by the Applicant:

  • Being the foreign spouse or children of a Turkish citizen, a blue card holder, or a holder of a Turkish residence permit who will act as a sponsor.
  • To provide documents showing that they live with the sponsor or intend to live together.
  • Not be among the foreigners who are not allowed to enter Turkey. (those without a passport or visa, those unable to justify their purpose of entering Turkey, and those who do not accept payment of receivables arising from previous visa or residence permit violations etc.)
  • The applicant and their spouse must both be over 18 years old.

Note: Marriage must not be entered into for the purpose of obtaining a family residence permit. Otherwise, a family residence permit will not be granted.

6. Can foreigners who marry Turkish citizens become Turkish citizens?

Marrying a Turkish citizen does not directly grant Turkish citizenship. However, foreigners who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and whose marriage is still ongoing may apply to acquire Turkish citizenship. Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Being married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years
  • Living within a family union
  • Not engaging in activities incompatible with marital unity
  • Not having any circumstances that would constitute an obstacle in terms of national security and public order

Note:If there's a reasonable suspicion that the marriage was only for getting a residence permit, authorities will check whether the marriage was made for this purpose. If they find out it was indeed for this reason, no family residence permit will be given, or if already given, it will be taken away. Even after receiving the permit, authorities may continue to check if the marriage is genuine.

In the event of divorce, if the necessary conditions for a family residence permit are met, it will be converted into a short-term residence permit and will not be canceled. However, if the conditions for a short-term residence permit are not met, the family residence permit will be directly canceled in the event of divorce.
